I am overcome with deep gratitude to Steve Batalden for his time and countless travels to pen this book, and to his wife Sandy Batalden for her invaluable editing skills that have brought this project to life.

Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to my father, Samson Ordjanian, who selflessly supported our family from the tender age of twelve when he first traveled to Russia to earn a living, and to my mother, Maria Rustamian, who tirelessly nurtured and cared for our extended family in Russia and beyond.

To my dearly departed siblings I owe an immense debt of gratitude. My brother Nikit Ordjanian not only lovingly assumed the role of head of family after the untimely passing of our father but he also later began to document our family history. My dear sister Isabella became a second mother to me after the passing of our mother Maria. And brother Ashot, who died too young, gave me the love of music, for which I am forever grateful.

To my loving husband of 70 years, Gregory J. Melikian, who embarked on countless adventures with me and helped me truly savor life, I offer a heartfelt thank you. Special recognition goes to my children: my son, James, who displayed an innate penchant for history from the very moment he entered this world; my son, Robert, a steadfast lawyer who has always been there for our family and for whom I express my deepest gratitude; my son, Richard, whose skilled hands can mend anything and who taught me the true meaning of quiet acts of charity; and a special word to my daughter, Ramona, who has been a source of joy and blessing every single day of her life. Thank you all.

To my amazing and steadfast daughters-in-law, Nevine and Ana, who have brought love and life to our family, and to my cherished grandchildren, Alexandra, Arra, and Isabella, who constantly make me burst with pride, I am eternally grateful for your presence in my life.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my extended family and cousins around the globe, whose unwavering love and support continually uplift me, especially my nieces, Elsa, Mary, Anahid, and Armen who carry our family legacy with pride. Gratitude is also owed to Father Zacharia Saribekyan and the St. Apkar Armenian Apostolic Church and Cultural Center of Arizona, along with our resilient community, for their indispensable contributions in constructing our cherished church, both in a physical and emotional sense.

Lastly, a profound thank you is extended to all those involved with the Thank You America Foundation of Arizona and The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian & East European Studies at Arizona State University.

May God shower you all with His blessings and take care of each and every one of you.

With all my love and deep appreciation,

Emma Ordjanian Melikian
